District believes that we, as
educators, influence the future by concentrating the energies of the school and
community on producing graduates with unlimited capacity to compete in a diverse
society.
The district's five campuses educate approximately 2,700 students from
the cities of Orange, Pinehurst, and West Orange. These cities are located
approximately 120 miles northeast of Houston on the Texas/Louisiana border.

West Orange – Cove schools will reopen for
classes on Wednesday, Sept. 24.
All schools will be prepared to welcome
students, with the exception of North Early Learning Center. Students
who attend North Early Learning Center will attend Oates Elementary
campus.
All campuses will observe an abbreviated
school day. Elementary students will attend classes from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Middle School and High School students will attend classes from 10 a.m.
– 3 p.m.
Breakfast and lunch will be provided for all
students. Bottled water will also be available.
Standardized dress will not be required.
Transportation to and from school will also
be provided to all students.
First Student Transportation asks parents to
know that prekindergarten and elementary students will only be allowed
to get off of a school bus at the end of the day if their
individual parent/guardian is at the home/shelter to receive
them.
Transportation will also be provided to
students who are displaced due to the Hurricane and living locally,
although these students may be out of the WO-C school district zones.
This includes WO-C students currently displaced and living with extended
family in the Little Cypress and Vinton areas. Please notify First
Student Transportation regarding these special transportation needs at
886-1855.
The West Orange – Cove CISD will continue to assist families and
students impacted by Hurricane Ike through the distribution of new and
gently used clothing and other items this week.
The District acted quickly last week to develop a donation
drive to help community members, staff, and students overcome the
devastation dealt by Hurricane Ike on Orange County and the surrounding
areas.
“When our entire district staff first
met together in a general assembly to plan the restart of school, they
expressed very strongly that they wanted to do something for our
community. Staff members spread the word to their families, friends and
churches, and boxes and bags of donated items began arriving the very
next day,” Lorraine Shannon, Director of Public Information said.
The district welcomed new or gently used
clothing of all types, standardized dress and/or casual clothing, in all
sizes, infant through adult.
Additionally the district accepted diapers, toiletries,
cleaning supplies, toys, school supplies, and cash donations.
A distribution site was set up at the WO-C Central Services
building and the District began distributing items two days later, on
Thursday, Sept. 25. Distribution continued Friday and Saturday, as well.
“The donation response has been amazing. We have been so
impressed by the number of brand new items that have been donated, as
well as the quality of the gently used items. This community is so eager
to help their neighbors.
“Our shoppers have also been extremely thoughtful, making
sure that items fit so that they do not take an item that they could not
inadvertently use,” Shannon said.
Additionally, monetary donations are still being accepted.
These donations may be made to West Orange – Cove CISD, noting “Donation
for Hurricane Ike,” P.O. Box 1107, Orange, Tx. 77631.
All donated items are being distributed by West Orange –
Cove Family Services to any area family in need, including WO-C staff
members.
Distribution hours this week are:
Thursday, Oct. 2
--- 2 – 6 p.m.
Friday, Oct. 3
--- 9 a.m.– 4 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 4
--- 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Distribution will be held at WO-C
Central Services, 2020 Western Avenue. Entry to the distribution site is
near the Carl Godwin Auditorium.
“The District would like to say thank
you to all of the individuals who have already made this event so
successful: our donors, our staff members and volunteers who are
working the event, and everyone who is spreading the word about what we
have to share with this community and other communities that have been
impacted by Hurricane Ike,” Shannon said.
WO-C will hold an additional drive this
fall to distribute winter clothing items, including coats.
Questions may be directed to WO-C Public Information,
882-5627, 882-5527 or 882-5437.
