Students Perform at STATE Convention

Forty-five Anderson Elementary third grade students were the center of attention and served as teachers, as well, at the “Live Well” Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance Annual State Convention recently. The students were the focal point of the “Learn by Moving” elementary physical education session presented by Patricia Lee, Anderson Elementary teacher.  “This is a first for our school to present at a state conference. The classes have been working very hard to perfect the skills for the presentation,” Lee said. She shared Anderson Elementary’s standard of excellence as the students demonstrated six different dances. Students performed in a crowed ballroom at the Moody Gardens Convention Center in Galveston Friday, Nov. 30. The third grade group performed rhythmic sit-ups, four different dance routines which included the “TAKS Shuffle,” and the Texas Star Square Dance,        Students then paired with audience members to teach dance moves and perform two of the group’s dances before a final performance of “You Raise Me Up” which was presented in sign language and dedicated to the teachers. "This was my seventh presentation at the TAHPERD Conference but I can honestly say it is my most memorable one. Educators from across the state came to me after the presentation, later in the evening at other events and the next day at closing sessions to congratulate me on an AWESOME group of students. I have taught for 27 years, coached high school varsity sports for16 years and even had the privilege of coaching district and state champions; but the student performance for me on Friday was the highlight of my career. I am extremely appreciative of the administrative support that made this event happen. I want to thank the parents, Mr. Benny Smith, Mrs. Jane Stephenson and Dr. Taylor Collins, who were all in attendance," Lee said.
